Regular yoga practice supports emotional & physical well-being by strengthening the body’s nervous system & immune system. Theresa can consult & collaborate with your health care providers if you have any concerns about whether yoga is safe for you to practice.

How can yoga help me?

Yoga is well-known for improving flexibility and balance, but there is much more to gain from regular practice, such as:

Strengthened nervous system (stress less and get annoyed less)

Strengthened immunity (get sick less often; recover faster when you do)

More patience (self-acceptance and improved relationships)

Inner peace (feeling calm and centered)

Is yoga safe for my condition?

Yoga can be adapted for all abilities and conditions. It can even be done in a chair! Some of the many conditions for which yoga has been recommended are:

Anxiety and depression (American Psychological Association)

PTSD (U.S. Army Surgeon General)

High blood pressure (American Heart Association)

Diabetes (American Diabetes Association)

Chronic Pain (American Medical Association)

What does trauma-informed mean?

The guiding principle of yoga is: do no harm. A trauma-informed instructor:

Understands how trauma can affect the mind and body

Knows the importance of creating a sense of safety

Avoids language or actions that could be triggering

Gives options rather than directives so students feel in control

Gives adjustments verbally or by demonstrating

In a typical session you can expect to experience physical movements that will help to release tension in joints and muscles and improve your flexibility, strength, posture, and balance. Breath awareness is a very important part of yoga practice, and you will learn breathing techniques to calm the nervous system, clear and focus the mind, and strengthen diaphragmatic breathing, which is the natural way our bodies are meant to breath but which easily gets dysregulated due to stress. A brief guided relaxation at the end of a session will allow your body and mind to completely relax and assimilate the experience of your practice. Theresa will also empower you by teaching you how you can easily incorporate simple yoga techniques at home, at school, or in the workplace to alleviate physical tension and emotional stress as it occurs.
